St.Gallen Festival

St.Gallen Festival

The St.Gallen Festival utilizes the magnificent Baroque cathedral in the UNESCO World Heritage Site monastery courtyard as the setting for an opera drama. This venue provides a rich cultural backdrop through its history and interaction with art. The opera, inspired by the life of poet André Chénier, combines poetry and realism to create a lavish and captivating historical musical drama.

The play revolves around a fictional love triangle between Chénier, aristocrat Maddalena, and revolutionary Gérard, set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and the Jacobins' reign of terror. Giordano uses a musical collage of historical dances, music from the French Revolution era, and highly emotional lyrical arias to create a grand historical epic. Greek director Rodula Gaitanou makes her Swiss debut, and Modestas Pitrenas conducts the St.Gallen Symphony Orchestra.
