Cattle show Herisau

The cattle shows in Appenzell Ausserrhoden are a wonderful tradition that celebrates the end of summer and the return of farmers and their cows from the alp. The shows are typically held in autumn and attract numerous spectators who come to see the most beautiful and best-performing cows. The most beautiful animals receive a paper flower wreath tied around their horns, and in the evening, after the animals are back home in the barn, the farmers meet with their relatives in the hall of an inn for the show criticism and prize distribution. The evening is typically filled with singing, fencing, dancing and a down-to-earth feast.
